Story of Grumpy Virgin

This Did you know that there is a Turkish drag show that predates @netflix, @rupaulofficial and even @queereye? Meet Huysuz Virjin (Grumpy Virgin), one of the most revered Turkish TV personalities of all time.

Seyfi Dursunoglu started performing in drag in Istanbul night clubs as early as 70s.

But it was his TV show that earned him a spot in public eye, in early 90s. I have created this portrait in memory of this wonderful person who passed away recently. I grew up watching him onTV and I remember how good it felt to see him receive so much respect.

I tried to capture his younger self when he just started to perform in Istanbul clubs in drag during the 70s.

I chose this period as it was a particularly ballsy move for him to perform insult comedy in drag in a place like Istanbul in the 70s. As TV came into prominence, progress took a rather faster pace. I used a dark blue background to draw all the more attention to the determined look on his face and his costume (He was known to sew his own costumes).
