Meet Jesper, a young man from Amsterdam. Growing up, Jesper had a hard time fitting in. He struggled with connecting with his peers, his family, even with himself at times.
During our chat over a couple of beers he told me that he just didn't have the urge to socialize.
He did not feel nervous, nor did he refrain from it. He just didn't feel like it, he says. When asked for a particular reason, he has difficulty in naming just one but tends to define the whole experience as a lack of will for anything, really.
In Jesper’s portrait, I wanted to depict his internal struggles that also contained episodes of self-harm, through a brutal war sceneI painted in the Ottoman miniature painting style.
Contrary to other portraits I did in this series, I wanted to bring out the intensity of his struggles through a limited color palette, using black predominantly and relying on the contrast it makes with the pastel background.
